How To Secure Your Router

Please click on your router brand. If your router is not listed, refer to your user's manual on how to secure your wireless router, or call us and we will assist you.

Link-Sys

To begin securing your Link-Sys wireless router, open your favourite web browser (Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari, Opera, etc) and type the following into the address bar (the bar that has the http:// stuff in it):

http://192.168.1.1

And press Enter. You will be presented with a box that requires a username and password. If you have not changed the default username and password on the router, enter the following:

Username: [blank]
Password: admin

If that does not work, try:

Username: admin
Password: admin

You will now be presented with a Link-Sys webpage. There are tabs at the top such as Setup, Wireless, Security, Access Restrictions, etc.

Click on the Wireless tab. Right below it, not a centimetre from the word Wireless, you will see "Wireless Security". Click on that.

Now in the whitespace below, you should see a bunch of boxes. Fill them in with the following information:

Security Mode : WPA Pre-Shared Key
WPA Algorithm : AES
WPA Shared Key : [A password of your choice that is at least                            8 characters long. Password can contain                            numbers and letters]
Group Key Renewal : 3600 seconds

Write down that information so you don't forget it.

Click the Save Settings button.

You may now close the web browser. Your router is secure, so the next time you try to connect to it wirelessly, (using a laptop or other wireless device) you will be required to enter the WPA Pre-Shared Key that you entered into the router.

D-Link

If that does not work, try:

Password: admin

You will now be presented with a D-Link webpage. On the left-hand side, click on the Wireless tab. In the whitespace to the right, under the Home tab, have the following settings:

Wireless Radio : On
SSID : [The name of your Cybernet SSID - don't change this if           there is something there]
Channel : 6
Security Mode : WPA-PSK
Cipher Tpe : AES
WPA Password : [A password of your choice that is at least 8                         characters long. Password can contain                         numbers and letters]

Write down that information so you don't forget it.

Click the Save Settings button.

You may now close the web browser. Your router is secure, so the next time you try to connect to it wirelessly, (using a laptop or other wireless device) you will be required to enter the WPA Password that you entered into the router.
