Setting up Windows XP for Dial-up

Please follow these instructions to set up your computer to be Internet ready.

 

Configure dial up networking

  1. On your desktop click on START, CONTROL PANEL, NETWORK AND INTERNET CONNECTIONS, NETWORK CONNECTIONS.
  2. At the top left under NETWORK TASKS click CREATE A NEW CONNECTION
  3. If your computer has not had a location set you will need to enter the following information, otherwise the NEW CONNECTION WIZARD will start and you can skip to step C. Set Country to Canada
    Enter Area Code 250
    Set Outside Line number if required
    Click OK
    Select Location with area code 250
    Click OK
  4. You will now be on the WELCOME TO NEW CONNECTION WIZARD screen.
    Click Next
    Click CONNECT TO THE INTERNET, Click Next
    Click SETUP MY CONNECTION MANUALLY, Click Next
    Click CONNECT USING A DIAL-UP MODEM, Click Next
    Enter Cybernet as the ISP name, Click Next
    Enter 847-5154 as your phone number, or 845-0039 for Houston, Click Next
    Enter your username and password, then confirm the password, Check All Boxes, Click Next
    Click ADD A SHORTCUT TO THIS CONNECTION TO MY DESKTOP, Click Finish
     

Configure Network settings

  1. If the NETWORK CONNECTIONS WINDOW is not still open, on your desktop click on START, CONTROL PANEL, NETWORK AND INTERNET CONNECTIONS, NETWORK CONNECTIONS.
  2. Right click on CYBERNET. Click PROPERTIES on the drop down list that appears. Click on the NETWORKING tab. Under THIS CONNECTION USES THE FOLLOWING ITEMS, select INERTNET PROTROCOL (TCP/IP) making sure that the box beside it is checked. Click PROPERTIES. (If TCP/IP is not on the list click on INSTALL, PROTOCOL, ADD. Choose MICROSOFT from the Manufacturers list and then TCP/IP. Press OK. It may ask to specify a Dial Up Adapter choose MICROSOFT again and then Dial up Adapter, click OK. It may ask you to insert your Windows CD, do so. Once all is added, go back to the beginning of #2)
  3. Make sure OBTAIN AN IP ADDRESS AUTOMATICALLY is selected. Also make sure OBTAIN DNS SERVER ADDRESS AUTOMATICALLY is selected. Click on the Advanced Button in lower right corner.Move to the DNS tab. Make sure that there is NO check in the box that says Register this Connections Address in DNS . Move to the WINS tab. Make sure that Enable LMHOSTS lookup is selected . Make sure that Disable NetBIOSover TCP/IP is selected. Click OK and then OK again and OK again. Close the NETWORK CONNECTIONS window. It may ask you to insert your Windows CD, do so and then it may ask to restart the computer to accept the new settings
  4. To dial in: double click on the Cybernet icon (from the desktop) and your USER NAME and PASSWORD should be entered. Click on CONNECT. It will go about connecting and verifying, when connected it will say CONNECTING AT..… there will be two little computer screens in the bottom right had corner of your screen.
  5. Now that you are connected you can go to INTERNET EXPLORER and search or view sites. In most cases the Internet Explorer icon is on the desktop (and in the Quick Launch Toolbar, part of the Windows Taskbar) and and you can double click on the icon to open it (the Big E).
