How much data is that?

One of the most common questions we hear at Cybernet is how much data a given online activity uses. Since we’d like to help you save money on your monthly Internet bill, we've put together this handy guide.

However, before we delve into the subject of data usage, let’s first briefly discuss what we mean when we use the term “data.” In this context, data is also known as “traffic” or “bandwidth.” These three words are used interchangeably to refer to the amount of Internet resources a certain online activity will use. Some activities and applications use more data than others, especially those with audio and video features.

In order to help you save money on your monthly internet bill, it’s a good habit to check your traffic usage on occasion so you can get a sense of what types of activities use more data than others. To check your daily Internet traffic, login to your account and follow the prompts.

People who tend to use a lot of high-bandwidth applications  will require a larger monthly plan than those who restrict their online activities to email and occasional web surfing. To give you an idea of just how much data certain activities use, have a look at the guide below. Note that one gigabyte (GB) contains 1,024 megabytes (MB):

Viewing a web page = 0.17 MB

Viewing a small novel = 1 MB

Downloading or sending a high-resolution photo = 2 MB

A game or app download = 4 MB

A 10 minute YouTube video = 10 MB

A full-length MP3 album = 60 MB

A high-quality audio/video one-hour Skype call = 675 MB

A feature length movie = 700 MB

If you were to watch a regular 1.5 hour movie on Netflix, have a one-hour Skype video conversation with a family member, and download ten high-quality photographs, you would have used approximately 1,400 MB or 1.4 GB of data in the same day. If you were on Cybernet’s Cost Controlled Lite plan, you would’ve exceeded your entire month’s data allowance in that one day. Thus, if you typically do activities requiring higher bandwidth usage, you’d want to consider a plan with a higher monthly data allowance, such as our Flex Plan.
